There is no single business in the world that didn’t feel the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. In the travel industry, local tour operators and other tourist-centered establishments were heavily affected by the implementation of a global lockdown. Even premier surfing destination Siargao had compromised many livelihoods. With this in mind, travel app Viyahe launches Ahon Siargao, a fundraising campaign in partnership with Siargao Island Surfers Association (SISA).
The initiative aims to raise funds to support 300 surf instructors and their families, as well as to provide them with basic supplies, such as groceries and hygiene products. Viyahe pledges to donate Php 50 for every user who drops a message from May 11 until June 30, 2020. To participate in this cause, users only need to download the Viyahe app on their mobile device, register their accounts, and chat ‘Ahon Siargao’ on the platform.
Viyahe’s CEO Alfredo Gonzalez will also be auctioning off two rare Jeff McCallum surfboards from his valued collection through the online platform CharityAuctionsToday as his personal contribution to this fundraiser.
Wilmar Melindo, president of SISA, shared that aside from the relief efforts, their association is currently cultivating a community garden to sustain food security for the most vulnerable in the island.
